Virtual kidnapping scam

A virtual kidnapping scam falsely claims that a loved one has been kidnapped and demands a fast ransom while preventing the target from checking whether the person is safe.

What it means

The scam often begins with a cloned scream or distressed voice, followed by a fake kidnapper who orders the target to stay on the line. Isolation, urgency, and payment methods that are hard to reverse do the real work.

How to protect yourself

  • Use a second phone to contact the supposed victim.
  • Refuse demands to stay isolated or keep the call secret.
  • Ask for private family codewords and call 911 after ending the call.
