Smishing

SMS phishing · text-message phishing

Smishing is phishing delivered by text message, usually using a fake delivery notice, account alert, family emergency, or payment request to steal information or money.

What it means

AI helps scammers write natural, personalized messages and imitate the tone of a real contact. A familiar name, logo, or sender ID does not make a text authentic, and replying can confirm that a phone number is active.

How to protect yourself

  • Do not tap unexpected links or reply with codes.
  • Open the organization’s app or type its known website yourself.
  • Verify family and friend requests through a known number or private codeword.
